Event #1

For my first event I attended an event hosted by artist Amy Myers on April 28. Her presentation looked at how she connects quantum mechanics to her art drawings. Myers' interesting in quantum mechanics came from her father who was a physicist and an aviator. Going into this presentation I had no idea what to expect or how to connect the topic of quantum mechanics to art, but as Amy Myers kept talking I was able to learn a lot.
This picture above is titled "Red Giant Between Sun and Earth" and took Amy Myers 10 months to complete. While talking about her art she said that her inspiration comes from reading books on quantum physics, where she can read of ideas and concepts to use as building blocks for ideas for her own artwork. These advanced books of science deal heavily with math in order to explain what phenomenon is happening at the molecular level. Myers' said that her main interest while drawing is complexity, as we can see in her art, they are all very complex. Just like robotics and machines are complex objects of technology, Myers' pieces of art are also complex with each line having meaning in a much larger operation or story.
Myers' said that while her art pieces are complex she is also measuring each line for precision. Every line she draws on one of her large sheets of paper has a calculated meaning. Myers' is able to incorporate math into her artwork by calculating how long or how short each line needs to be are every angle in order to produce the correct image by utilizing perfect ratios.
I would 100% recommend this event to anyone that can find a recording because Amy Myers has such a unique way of connecting art and science at such a deep and intricately precise level. Anyone who can view this event can learn more about how art can be pulled from science at a deep level. I didn't think that science could connect to art from a molecular standpoint, but Myers is able to make it work. I love how she was able to explain her process of being able to read and get an idea of what to draw then just draw whatever comes to mind with no clear end picture. My favorite quote that she had was "enter work without defining it", and I think this can be applied to everything as you can enter something with a goal of finishing it but you don't have to follow the "correct" steps but you can create your own.
