This week's topic focused on the hidden relationship between mathematics and art. I have taken a few art classes in my life and many math classes in my academic career, but I never realized that there was a connection between the two. At first glance of any type of artwork, you don't think about math but you either think how pretty the art piece is or question how the piece is even considered art.

A  main point in this week's lecture was the concept of the golden ratio. This concept of the golden ratio is, to me, the key relation between math and art. The golden ratio in simple terms is the ratio of a line segment but into two pieces of different lengths such that the ratio of the whole segment to that of the longer segment is equal to the ratio of the longer segment to the shorter segment. I know that sounds  like a lot but we see it everyday of our lives.
We can see it even on our own bodies, like our arms for example. Our bodies are perfect examples of the relationship between art and math, as the golden ratio can be seen in many places.
After viewing this week's lecture and reading more into the beautifully hidden relationship between math and art I can now see this relationship more in my everyday life than I initially thought. As I am writing this blog I am currently in Salt Lake City, Utah and all around my hotel are perfect examples of the golden ratio, as well as many other forms of artwork that deal with mathematics and other concepts like linear perspective and vanishing points.

  1. Hi Josh, I found your post to be very interesting. I like how you were able to tie the golden ratio into all aspects of life around us. I specifically liked how you used the human body for an example of the golden ratio. After reading your post and watching lectures this week, I feel that I am now totally aware of how math plays a big role in our everyday lives.

  2. Your post was very nice. I think you explain very well how we don't realize how math is used in art right away. Focusing on the golden ratio was a good call. What better way to explain math in art. I think your reference to you being in salt lake city really ties in your post,
